About This Course

The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification is designed for people who want to develop a broad understanding of project management without focusing on one particular methodology. It provides the essential knowledge needed to participate more confidently and effectively in projects of different sizes and types.

The course explores how projects operate within organisations and introduces project lifecycles, roles, planning, scope, schedules, resources, risks, quality, communication and teamworking. It follows the official APM syllabus and prepares participants for the PFQ multiple-choice examination.

Prerequisites – No previous project-management knowledge, experience or qualifications are required. Participants should have an appropriate standard of English to understand the course materials and complete the examination. APM recommends a standard broadly equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or CEFR Level B2.

Course Outline

The course provides a structured introduction to the main concepts, terminology and techniques included within the APM PFQ syllabus. Topics include:

  • Understand projects, project management and the differences between projects and business-as-usual activity.
  • Explore how projects relate to programmes and portfolios and operate within the wider organisational environment.
  • Compare linear, iterative, hybrid and extended project lifecycles.
  • Understand the responsibilities of sponsors, project managers, governance bodies, team members, product owners and PMOs.
  • Explore project planning, business cases, benefits, stakeholder engagement, estimating and progress reporting.
  • Define and control scope using product, work, cost and organisational breakdown structures.
  • Understand scheduling, critical paths, milestones, timeboxing, resources and procurement.
  • Identify and manage project risks, issues, changes and configuration requirements.
  • Explore quality planning, control, assurance, decision gates, reviews and project audits.
  • Develop effective communication plans and understand leadership, teamwork and team-development models.
  • Review key terminology and practise the knowledge required for the PFQ examination.

Examination and Qualification

The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification is assessed through an online examination containing 60 compulsory multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 60 minutes to complete the examination, with each correct answer worth one mark and no marks deducted for incorrect answers. A score of 60%, equivalent to 36 correct answers out of 60, is required to pass. Books, notes and other supporting materials cannot be used during the examination. Full details of the official syllabus, qualification and assessment are available on the Association for Project Management website.
