Background

Network Rail owns and operates the railway infrastructure across England, Scotland, and Wales, managing more than 20,000 miles of track, thousands of stations, bridges, tunnels, and signals, and employing over 34,000 people nationwide.

To support collaboration, productivity, and digital transformation across the organisation, Network Rail sought to maximise the value of its investment in Microsoft 365. The goal was to equip employees with the skills and confidence to use the platform effectively, improving communication, efficiency, and collaboration across teams.

The Challenge

Following the implementation of Microsoft 365, Network Rail identified that many employees were not fully utilising the capabilities of the platform. Rather than simplifying day-to-day work, the technology was often underused or creating inefficiencies due to a lack of confidence and understanding.

The organisation required a trusted training partner capable of delivering high-quality, scalable learning solutions across multiple Microsoft applications while ensuring a consistent experience for employees nationwide.

Strategy & Approach

Elliott Training partnered with Network Rail to design and deliver an ongoing programme of Microsoft applications training, supporting employees across the organisation to develop practical digital skills and improve productivity.

Over the past four years, Elliott Training has delivered approximately 10 courses per month covering Power BI, Excel, Excel VBA, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Project, Access, and, more recently, ServiceNow. Training has been delivered virtually and on-site, with programmes tailored to the needs of different teams and business functions.

Alongside delivery, Elliott Training manages the full training administration process, including trainer coordination, learner communications, training materials, evaluation reporting, and certification, ensuring a seamless experience for both delegates and stakeholders.

The Results

The programme has helped employees make better use of Microsoft 365, improving collaboration, communication, and productivity across the organisation.

Participants reported increased confidence in using digital tools, a stronger understanding of how Microsoft applications integrate, and greater efficiency in their day-to-day roles. The quality and consistency of delivery have also contributed to high levels of learner satisfaction across the programme.

Key results included:

  • Improved collaboration and communication across teams
  • Greater confidence using Microsoft 365 applications
  • Increased productivity through better use of digital tools
  • Enhanced understanding of application integration and workflows
  • Consistently high learner satisfaction scores

The Outcome

Over a four-year partnership, Elliott Training has supported Network Rail’s digital transformation journey by helping employees develop the skills needed to work more effectively with Microsoft 365 and other business-critical systems.

By combining expert trainers, flexible delivery, and exceptional programme management, Elliott Training has become a trusted learning partner, helping Network Rail drive adoption, improve efficiency, and maximise the value of its technology investment across a workforce of more than 34,000 employees.
